PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, WRITER – “Call of the Hummingbird”

En Espanol

Alice Klein is the co-founder, editor and CEO of Toronto’s NOW Magazine, a free alternative news and entertainment weekly with a circulation of 355,000. NOW is one of the largest independent media organizations in Canada.

As an accomplished writer and passionate observer of social movements, Klein has covered a breadth of subjects ranging from Canada and the global economy to behind the scenes at the Dalai Lamas Kalachakra initiation. As an original thinker, her comfort zone is writing on the connections between politics, economics, and the archetypal.

But perhaps more importantly, Kleins avant-garde vision and commitment to community and culture have been a decisive force in shaping NOWs evolution as a publication that is both leading edge and enormously well-read. Like her film, NOW Magazine is both substantial and fun.

Klein was conceived in Mexico by parents who fled wartime Europe, born in New York City and grew up mostly in Toronto. She has a BA in social history from the University of Toronto. In 2000, she was named one of the 100 Alumni of the Century. She is on the Board of the Toronto Arts Council and is a founding member of Green Enterprise Toronto (GET).

Call of the Hummingbird is her first film.

CAROLINE CHRISTIE
EDITOR – “Call of the Hummingbird”

In an award-winning, 20-year career as a film and TV editor, Caroline Christie has had a hand in crafting the crusading message of Michael Moore and has breathed life into homicidal puppets.

The Montreal-born Christie, who developed her skills in tandem with her husband, director Peter Lynch, has also helped articulate his creative visions, editing all of his signature works.

Christie’s wide variety of film and television projects include Lynch’s Arrowhead (winner of the 1994 Genie for Best Short Film), Project Grizzly (1996), The Herd (1998), Cyberman (2001) and his latest, A Whale of a Tale (2004). Her work on Michael Moore’s The Awful Truth earned the series nominations for both a Writers’ Guild of America award and an Emmy in 2001. She won an editing award at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival for her work on Elida Schogt’s acclaimed Zyklon Portrait. She was also the editor of Army Of One, Hot Docs 2004 winner for Best Canadian Feature.

Her eclectic eye has led her to the world of comedy, fine-tuning the Comedy Network’s hit series Puppets Who Kill – winner of the Rose D’Or award at the prestigious Montreux Festival in 2002 and several Genies, and to the reality/comedy hybrid series Punched Up.
